Smart Construction Planner - About the project

On the eve of the new industrial revolution, the transformation of the construction sector is on the move: digitization, robotization, drones, 3D printing and, of course, the building information model (BIM) are gradually contributing to the metamorphosis of the sector. The building becomes a ground of innovation continuously adapting itself to its own requirements of energy performance, need for quality of life or productivity. The act of building becomes increasingly complex and requires more and more expert profiles. Technology is a relevant response to the need for ever-closer collaboration between actors, a sine qua non condition for achieving a result of high quality.

The Smart Construction Planner is part of this digital transformation and unveils the "connected construction site". The original idea of this innovation project is to place sensors on site to feed a new version of the construction site container that is equipped with various technological supports. These physical and human sensors contribute to the collection of information in real time. The data is then centralized and visualized in the site container where the work teams are located. Tangible and tactile interfaces contribute to the collaborative dimension of the exchanges between team members, and decisions are relayed instantaneously to the site for application. The constant data flows allow decisions to be taken in full coherence with the reality on the ground.

Inspired by the manufacturing industry and Lean Construction methods, the Smart Construction Planner is an operational site management solution that supports logistics, quality control, planning and scheduling of the construction site.

Concept

1. Collaborative planning

The principles of Lean Construction constitute the methodological basis of the tool. Initially resting on post-it notes that make it possible to symbolize the tasks of construction, the method here is digitized. The collaborative planning service associates task scheduling with their location on a digital map or model. The system, based on a multi-touch interface, includes a mobile application for each of the trades to generate the post-it tasks as in the initial method, scheduling them and then controlling the prerequisites for carrying out this task (e.g. checking the availability of materials). When the prerequisites are not validated, alerts inform the user of the impossibility of performing the scheduled task.

2. Materials management

For a better traceability of materials, a mobile application is dedicated to and associated with the SCP information system. This mobile application makes it possible to access the status information of materials (ordered, shipped, stored) by scanning QR codes affixed to the site materials and to modify them.

3. Dynamic Site Layout Planning System

The Dynamic Site Layout Planning System makes it possible to manage the logistical aspects of the site in a collaborative approach. This application is based on a tangible interface that enables, through objects symbolizing commands or interactions, the planning and optimizing of on-site storage in view of the existing spatial constraints and the evolution of the site.

Today, the Smart Construction Planner is in the state of "Proof of Concept", but several construction companies have already indicated their interest in collaborating with the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) to deploy the solution on experimental sites, to work together on its development and thus contribute to the digital transformation of the construction sector.
